When retail investors searched for a way to ride the SpaceX wave through 2025 and into 2026, they turned to space-themed ETFs — the logical move for anyone who believes the commercial space frontier is about to become a serious growth industry. The pitch writes itself: diversified access, managed risk, institutional-grade curation. But the returns told a different story, and the gap between the SpaceX narrative and ETF performance raises a question that goes well beyond fund selection.
Pull up the top holdings of any major space ETF — the ARK offerings, the SPDR variants, the European thematic funds — and a pattern emerges immediately. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Technologies, L3Harris: defense primes that have been in the aerospace business for decades and whose space revenue is a modest fraction of their overall mix. Below them sit the emerging names — Rocket Lab, AST SpaceMobile, Redwire — legitimate participants in the new space economy. But SpaceX, the company whose Falcon 9 rocket captures upward of sixty percent of the global commercial launch market, whose Starlink constellation has crossed several million subscribers and is generating real recurring revenue, whose Starship program is reshaping what launch economics could look like — is absent from every single one.
This absence is not an oversight. SpaceX is a private company, and private companies cannot be held in a standard equity ETF. The exclusion is structurally inevitable. But the consequences are anything but trivial. ETF investors seeking space exposure end up holding a curated collection of SpaceX's competitors, many of whom are losing market share precisely because of SpaceX's dominance. The United Launch Alliance's pricing power evaporated when Falcon 9 made reusability mainstream. Established satellite operators face relentless cost pressure from Starlink's economics. The space ETF turns out to be, in many cases, an index of the companies most threatened by the very dynamic the ETF claims to capture.
Diversification across losers is not diversification. It is concentration in the wrong direction.
The broader pattern behind this paradox is visible across the entire technology landscape. Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, Stripe, and SpaceX collectively represent trillions of dollars in private market valuation. They are the most consequential companies in their respective sectors by almost any analytical measure. And retail investors cannot own them.
The narrative of financial democratization — built on index funds, fractional shares, and ETF proliferation — rests on an assumption that rarely gets examined: that the most valuable companies will eventually come to the public market, and that the public market therefore represents a reasonably complete picture of where value is being created. For most of the twentieth century, that assumption held. Companies went public because they needed the capital, and the IPO was a necessary passage. What has changed in the age of sovereign wealth funds, massive private credit markets, and deep-pocketed venture rounds is that the largest technology companies no longer need public capital to grow. They can fund billion-dollar infrastructure buildouts from private sources, and they have strong incentives to stay private: no disclosure obligations, no quarterly earnings pressure, no activist shareholders demanding short-term returns.
SpaceX's decision to remain private is a case study in this dynamic. Elon Musk watched Tesla's public life subject him to years of volatility, short-seller campaigns, and governance battles that consumed management bandwidth. The calculation for SpaceX is different: the company has access to essentially unlimited private capital, its competitive position is strong enough that it does not need the credibility signal of a public listing, and staying private preserves the long-horizon decision-making that defines its strategy. An IPO, if it ever comes, will be a choice rather than a necessity.
For retail investors, the implication is uncomfortable. The ETF wrapper — designed to democratize access — becomes the mechanism through which ordinary savers are most systematically excluded from the companies generating the most value. They hold the diversified second tier while institutions hold the concentrated winner. Financial democratization becomes, in practice, access to what remains after the real gains have already been claimed.
This is not an argument against ETFs as instruments. It is an argument about the limits of a market structure that increasingly concentrates value creation in a pre-IPO phase that is structurally inaccessible to ordinary investors. Until the regulatory and financial architecture around private market access changes in a meaningful way, the space ETF will remain a product that delivers exposure to everything in the industry — except the part that matters most.
